There are so many different ways to work yoga into a busy schedule, and so many health and wellbeing reasons for doing so. Whether you’re looking to practise as part of a wider fitness regime for toning muscles and building strength, or looking for somewhere to re-balance and centre yourself in your body in the middle of the bustling city, you’ll be able to find the perfect yoga classes in Clapham.
With the beautiful open space of Clapham Common to enjoy in the summertime, Clapham is the perfect place to start a practice. Even if studios and gyms are more your thing, walking home across the green after an uplifting class is the perfect boost during a busy week. If you wanted to round off a day off wellness at one of Clapham’s vegan restaurants, there’s more than enough on the menu!
We’ve put together a guide to help you find your feet and get started with the right yoga class, teacher and space for you.
For a good balance of holistic healing and rigorous physical exercise, try Sadhana Yoga and Wellbeing. This studio offers a diverse range of yoga and strength classes taught in a welcoming space, as well as massage therapies and meditation classes. The perfect oasis of calm and focus to get you out of your head and back into your body.
To try out Sadhana, we suggest you grab their introductory offer of 30 consecutive days of Unlimited Yoga and Movement Classes for £45 – once you’ve bought this, start booking yourself into classes.
Just a short walk from Clapham Junction station is MoreYoga, one of London’s biggest yoga franchises. Membership here means you can practise yoga in beautiful state-of-the-art studios all across London. If you travel a lot and find yourself in different corners of the city all the time, this could be for you!
From Candlelit Yoga and Meditation to Dance Flow, MoreYoga have a creative and diverse timetable of classes – you’ll be spoilt for choice! Start with a four class pass for £38 (valid for two months) or try a 12 class pass for £90 (valid for four months). If you love it there, join as an annual member for £500 for a year of unlimited yoga.
Operating out of Claphamspace in Clapham North, Mahala Yoga takes yoga back to its origins. Through mindful movement, guided meditation and the power of the breath, this is yoga for relaxation and balance: fitness is not the sole intention. With Hatha flow and Vinyasa yoga classes accompanied with essential oils, if you’re feeling tired and weary after a busy day in the city these yoga classes might be just what the doctor ordered. For a relaxing post-class cocktail with a friend, stay in Clapham North and explore some of the gorgeous bars and cocktail gardens in the area.
On Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.45pm, Mahala Yoga classes are £12.50 per drop in, or £40 a month for unlimited yoga. You can also purchase a six class pass for £60, to be used over three months.
There is a wide variety of healing related classes on offer at the Satayanda Yoga Centre in Clapham South. Learn to sing Kirtan for beginners, or attend yoga classes developed specifically to gently ease back pain with their evening timetable. They also run a 12-week yoga and meditation course, where you’ll learn to synchronise mind, body and breath and deepen your mental and physical practice. This is yoga at its most spiritual.
Satayanda also sell audio recordings of classes, so once you’ve taken a class you can take a version of that same class home to practise and perfect. They also run retreats and workshops if you’re looking to really immerse yourself in your practice. Classes are £10 each – you can call or email the centre to enquire and book.
At Yoga Haven, just around the corner from Clapham Common tube station, you’ll find a comprehensive schedule of hot yoga classes, from pregnancy yoga to Vinyasa flow (as well as some traditional classes without heat). We recommend trying their Hot Yoga Fusion class if you’re more experienced, or ease into things with a Hot Yoga Basics class. Top tip from the instructors here: turn up to class early so you can lie down and acclimatize to the heat before class begins.
Yoga Haven’s pricing comes in at £17 for a drop-in class, or save a bit of money and pay £140 to attend 10 classes within a three-month period.
For this fitness studio, yoga forms just part of what’s on offer. Alongside HIIT, strength and spinning classes, yoga here is part of a wider program designed to increase your overall fitness. At Oncore all yoga classes are suitable for all levels, though you might find their classes are more focused on working hard, building strength and toning than the more relaxing and spiritual side of yoga. If that’s what you’re looking for, then this is the place for you! That said, there are plenty of gyms in the Clapham area if you wanted to venture for something beyond the yoga mat.
We recommend taking advantage of Oncore’s introductory offer, where £40 gets you unlimited yoga classes for 21 days after you purchase the offer. Otherwise it’s £18 to drop in for one class only or for 10 classes over six months, it’s a class pass of £140.
In the summertime, Wild Flow Yoga teacher Robyn offers outdoor classes, though she announces them seasonally, so watch this space for updates. Robyn also teachers indoor classes for the drop-in price of £10 in Claphamspace, in Clapham North, all year round. Why not book an early morning session and then go and explore one of Clapham’s bottomless brunches for a fun-filled Saturday!
