Over the past few years Whitechapel has seen a rise in popularity thanks to its proximity to The City, as well as the newly announced ‘Whitechapel Vision’. This regeneration project, which will be finished by 2025, includes 3,500 new homes, seven public squares and new open spaces.
If you can’t wait until then, however, the area already has a fantastic range of homes, as well as a local community from all over the world. Georgian houses, warehouse conversions and new build flats sit alongside high-rise apartments, with many 18th-century houses being restored by The Spitalfields Trust.
Also home to a number of conservation areas, Whitechapel is one of the most varied areas of London. With links to the District line and Overground, and soon to be on the new Elizabeth Line, Whitechapel’s central location and rising status makes it a fantastic part of London to move to.
With every street bursting with culture and history, Whitechapel today hosts a great number of markets, international restaurants and galleries. The Whitechapel Gallery is a draw for tourists and locals alike. Opened in 1901, it is often called “the artists’ gallery for everyone” with its exhibitions, commissions and historic showrooms. If exciting cuisine and one-of-a-kind deals are more up your street, then Whitechapel street market will be the perfect place to stop off.
And if you’ve not had your fill, then Spitalfields is just around the corner! Punjabi and Bangladeshi food features heavily in these markets, and in the rest of Whitechapel, with some of the best in London to sink your teeth into. Zaiqa is a family-run Punjabi restaurant that has been open for more than 30 years and is well known in the area, with local institution Tayyabs following close behind.
There’s nothing better than a classic East London pub to end your night, and nowhere does it better than the Blind Beggar. Once the watering hole for the infamous Kray twins, the pub is steeped in history and loved by locals. With independent coffee shops around every corner, and even an independent cinema, Whitechapel’s draw grows stronger every year.
Don’t miss: The East London mosque, right in the heart of the area, is integral to the makeup of Whitechapel.
