Marsh & Parsons in Stoke Newington
Mixing quaint, village-like streets with independent bars, restaurants and shops, Stoke Newington combines the artistic essence of Hackney with a slightly more residential feel. Green areas like Clissold Park and Abney Park Cemetery, as well as a multitude of ‘Outstanding’ primary and secondary schools, make this a haven for families, with the West Reservoir Center on the edge of the area adding to the appeal.

Far from feeling like a quiet suburb, Stoke Newington is jam-packed with a plethora of independent businesses – many of which are internationally renowned! Stop by The Ault Shillelagh, which was named the best Irish pub outside of Ireland by The Irish Times, who were presumably impressed by the plentiful supply of Guinness and regular live music. The Jolly Butchers is another must-stop for craft beer lovers. Despite its name, there is no meat to be found: instead, a great range of tap and bottled beers that get updated regularly.
If brunch is your favourite meal of the day, you’ll struggle to find a better spot than The Good Egg. Started in Stoke Newington, but so popular it now has an offshoot in Soho, this Brooklyn-style restaurant has become renowned by people all over London, with some travelling hours just to get a taste. Treat yourself afterwards to an authentic, traditional gelato from Romeo & Guilietta and take a stroll through Clissold Park: if it’s very warm, you could even cool down in the paddling pool.
Relaxed and full of character, Stoke Newington’s remarkably strong community spirit and support of local businesses makes it a truly distinctive part of the capital.
Don’t miss: L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, which is a Naples pizzeria regarded as the world’s best. They only serve two pizzas – margarita and marinara – and you’re pretty much guaranteed to queue, but the result is worth the effort.
