Named after the 19th century estate that was built in the area, St. Margarets holds onto its Victorian essence with leafy streets and green spaces. St. Margarets’ draw comes from its numerous ‘Outstanding’ rated primary and secondary schools, along with being home to countless pubs, whilst still being just over half an hour from Waterloo by train.
Detached houses line wide streets, with attractive period features and even some ‘secret’ communal gardens. Cast iron fireplaces and ornate corniced ceilings can be found within many of these homes, making them highly sought after, especially for those looking to step away from the usual hustle and bustle of London life. With close proximity to the Thames and a village feel, St. Margarets feels a world away from the capital, while giving you all the amenities you’ll ever want.
You’ll never go thirsty thanks to the many local pubs that sit in the area, particularly around St. Margarets station, Around Crown Road and St Margarets Road, you can find shops such as Real Ale, which sells beer from British microbreweries, and classic establishments like The Crown, that have a choice selection of cask ales, guest beers and cocktails. Beatles fans will also want to head down to The Turk’s Head on Winchester Road, since it was featured in the film ‘A Hard Day’s Night’.
The area’s neighbour feel is thanks to its historical buildings and regular street parties, such as the yearly St. Margarets’ fair, which celebrates local talent and produce. For an injection of art head to the Orleans House Gallery, a contemporary art gallery set in beautiful gardens overlooking the river. Stroll through the Moormead and Bandy Recreation Ground on a sunny day, taking advantage of their football pitches and tennis courts. If you’re in the mood for a longer walk, Richmond Park is just a stone’s throw away.
Don’t miss: Marble Hill House, which was built for Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk. The house and gardens were planned by fashionable connoisseurs, including the poet Alexander Pope. It showcases the atmosphere of fashionable Georgian-era life.
