Rivers and green spaces mix effortlessly with extensive transport links and corporate headquarters in Brentford. Echoes of its Victorian past can be observed everywhere, especially in the types of houses on offer. Townhouses and terraces are a staple, the best views of the Thames can be found in the many modern apartment buildings which line the riverfront all the way from Brentford to Kew Bridge.
History permeates Brentford, but there is dynamic change as the centre is undergoing extensive redevelopment which is attracting more and more new and independent businesses moving to the area meaning Brentford is becoming much more than its past. Especially popular with families who want somewhere where space is more affordable, but with great transport links, this corner of London might end up surprising you.
Though it’s well known for being close to Kew Gardens, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to attractions in the area. Syon House, a Grade I listed building, is a spectacular feat of Tudor architecture which was the family home of the Duke of Northumberland for over 400 years. The London Museum of Water & Steam – housed within an old waterworks and pumping station – also highlights the area’s historic significance. Moving back to the present, Brentford presents a number of interesting and modern shops, restaurants and pubs. Hen Corner is a micro-bakery and cookery school that aims to help residents of Brentford ‘turn their urban corner green’, baking just enough for the local community. The neighbourhood also hosts a weekly market at the renovated Market Place, which offers locally sourced, high-quality produce from a range of farmers and businesses.
Gunnersbury Park, Boston Manor Park, and Syon Park are among the larger open spaces in the surrounding area, making it a good choice for anyone who loves a stroll on a sunny day, while the new Brentford FC Community Stadium presents entertainment for both football and rugby lovers. Complementing the green space are museums and art galleries such as the Watermans Art Centre and the Musical Museum. Mix in good value houses and flats compared to many parts of London and Brentford ticks a lot of boxes.
Don’t miss: Spa de Sal, a salt spa where you can treat yourself to a myriad of therapies which have been known to help alleviate breathing and skin problems. An easy way to condense the benefits of sea air, this unique spa is definitely worth a visit after a stressful week.
