The feeling I got the first time I walked into head office for my interview: the people looked happy and were so welcoming! Everything seemed so exciting and I knew it was the only place I wanted to work.
My background was in Hospitality and PR; I graduated from university with a degree in Media, English and Sociology, and moved to London to work for a PR firm in Kensington before starting my career in estate agency.
I started as an Office Coordinator in our Balham office and learned about how the business operated. This gave me thorough knowledge which helped me progress through the ranks in the business, from Negotiator to Senior Negotiator, then to Manager, Senior Manager, Associate Director and finally to Director; the progression took me six years!
I’ve been with Marsh & Parsons for eight years.
Marsh & Parsons host bi-annual awards ceremonies to celebrate their employees hard work and successes; these include categories for ‘Most Units Sold’ and ‘Overall Excellence’ and ‘Stand-Out Contribution’. During my time as a manager, I have won the ‘Overall Excellence – Lettings Manager’ award.
Marsh & Parsons have a great training programme to help negotiators succeed, including the opportunity to receive the industry-renowned ARLA qualification. This is an invaluable qualification as it demonstrates regulatory knowledge and credibility as an agent.
For individuals like myself who used the Office Coordinator role as a stepping stone to become a negotiator, it exposes you to both the sales and lettings teams, providing invaluable knowledge of the industry. Being so closely linked to the teams means that you see and understand that buying/renting a property is an emotional transaction that must be handled accordingly; a skill that is paramount for success as a negotiator.
Always has and always will be the people.
Be driven and enthusiastic, with a never give up attitude. If you want something, work hard to get it!
