This week, let’s take a trip to the west to Chiswick.
Once a distant country retreat, today Chiswick retains all its rural charm with excellent access to town and the bars and restaurants worthy of Soho. The area has easy access to both the north and south circular and is served by four stops on the London Underground. Chiswick is dominated by leafy avenues and charming houses which evoke a sense of village living– perfect for those who seek the best of both worlds.
By day, Brew is a perennial brunch favourite where you can tuck into pan-fried halloumi bagels, eggs benedict and freshly squeezed juices. In the evening this Aussie-inspired café-bar is populated with the great and good of Chiswick who come here to tuck into the stone baked pizzas and lamb skewers. The booze laden hard shakes are a deliciously decadent adult treat and the dirty juices are a welcomed take on the more traditional daytime tipple.
This shamelessly chic Nordic-inspired restaurant headed up by Mikael Jonsson is a genuine culinary marvel. Voted one of the top 50 restaurants in the world in 2018, both the quality and the price reflect its soaring status. There is no fixed menu and the selection changes on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. The chefs will tailor dishes to your personal preferences at what is officially one of Chiswick’s best restaurants.
Charlotte’s Bistro has cemented its position on the Chiswick dining scene, perfect for an elegant cocktail or a delectable dinner. The ambience is relaxed and informal, but the food is quite simply superb. Enjoy dishes such as the white mushroom and truffle risotto or confit of duck leg perfectly paired with a glass of something from the extensive wine selection.
The Roebuck is an accomplished gastropub in the heart of the neighbourhood and the perfect place for a post-work drink or a weekend get together. The traditional cosy interiors are exquisite in winter and the large elegant garden is perfect for sun-kissed London evenings. They offer a sizeable selection of wines and serve both traditional ales and lagers, as well as plenty of craft beers for the trendy Chiswick crowd.
With its white interiors paired with natural wood furnishings, 197 Chiswick Fire Station is effortlessly graceful. Not just an excellent restaurant, this is also one of the area’s best places to sip a delightful cocktail over good conversation. The impressive wine list is equally matched by the creative cocktail menu which features plenty of classics and some innovative additions.
This cosy pub located on a quiet pedestrian street in Chiswick is where the locals flock for a good drink and an always welcoming atmosphere. Though beautifully restored, it never strays far from its roots and retains the gloriously resplendent original features. In the summer, the outdoor area is bustling with everyone from families to young professionals making the most of the London sunshine.
This 18th-century villa in the heart of Chiswick is arguably the neighbourhood’s most famed landmark. You can tour the house for a small fee but it’s free to explore the beautifully manicured gardens. They also host a range of on-site events including the annual pub in the park festival and rotating exhibitions and installations.
This vintage ice cream parlour is a Chiswick hot spot in the summer months with the local crowd clamouring to get their hands on a pot of handmade deliciousness. The lemon sorbet and blue banana are just two of the irresistible flavours to sample at this gem of a café.
Regularly touted as the prettiest area in London, Strand-on-the-Green is a glorious place to watch the world go by in the leafy suburb. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, the Strand is the perfect spot for a winter walk and summer picnics. Stop off in a local pub for tipple or two at the weekend while taking in the picturesque landscapes.
