We know that getting away isn’t easy right now, so we’ve put together a blog series helping you to find your own little bit of paradise, right here in London. We’ve got plenty of suggestions, from eating and drinking like you’re on holiday through to entertaining your children and setting up the perfect alfresco dining spot in your garden: enough to make you take a look at your home with fresh eyes this summer.
For many, a summer holiday centres around food: the treasure trove of back street boulangeries, cramped cafes serving local delicacies, and hunting out affordable fine-dining restaurants. And whilst the chance to go abroad may not come round this summer, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to reach uncharted culinary territories. We are lucky enough to live in a metropolitan city that embraces cultures far and wide: read on for our suggestions for eating like you’re on holiday, whilst staying home in London.
First up– breakfast. Now your first meal of the day can often vary while on holiday. For some, it’s grabbing a quick bite on the go before seeing the sights, while for others it’s a more of a leisurely affair. If you’re looking to recreate the morning pastry that you’d be picking up from a European bakery, look no further than Pophams. Their large array of croissants, swirls and twists has provided excellent Instagram content for the residents of Islington and Hackney in recent years and certainly gets a thumbs up from us. Alternatively, if you’re looking for the real Parisian experience why not treat yourself to a sweet treat from Piccadilly’s Le Deli Robuchon– an institution when it comes to French cuisine. For those wanting to enjoy the gentler mornings that we can become accustomed to on holiday, why not place an order with Milk in Balham. Available for delivery or takeaway, Milk is offering a whole host of artisan brunch dishes that will certainly surpass the hotel breakfast buffet!
Lunch too poses several questions while you’re away. Do you pick up a spread from the local supermarket or decide on a larger meal at your new favourite restaurant? Fortunately, in London you have just as many options as when you’re abroad. Take l’Angolo Delicatessen for example. A local icon amongst the inhabitants of Kensal Rise, L’Angolo offer a wider range of imported Italian meats and cheeses perfect for a picnic in nearby Queen’s Park. Similarly, French delicatessen Laurent’s offers a wide selection of breads, cakes and deli goods available for takeaway and delivery from their Paddington and St John’s Wood branches. For those of us replacing the East Coast with East London and Central Park with Victoria Park, a delicious salad from Palm Greens (Hackney) should be top of the list. Having trained in the Big Apple, the café’s owner Kali Hamm has brought their beautiful fresh dishes to Hackney and Spitalfields.
If you were planning to head further afield this summer and are looking to experience amazing oriental cooking here in London, renowned Malaysian restaurant Sambal Shiok (Islington) have opened a sister restaurant, NASI Economy Rice (Islington), next door. NASI offers fresh and affordable Malaysian dishes for takeaway and delivery from Holloway Road. Alternatively if you fancy a light bite like sushi try the impressive Yashin, tucked away just off Kensington High Street. Yashin’s delicious sushi is available on Deliveroo or Click and Collect from their restaurant in W8.
As you approach the evening whilst on holiday, it’s often a chance to head back to your accommodation and put on your glad rags, ready to explore what your chosen location has to offer. Now although we’re staying at home for the summer, it doesn’t mean that we can’t make the most of the evening meal.
Spain is of course a popular destination for a summer holiday, and whilst there are a whole host of dishes to try, paella and tapas remain two favourites of the British tourist. If you’re looking to share smaller dishes with friends and loved ones, why not try tapas from London favourite Iberica (multiple locations)? Transporting you to your favourite Spanish destination, Iberica’s tapas and wines are available on Deliveroo and Supper. For North Londoners after fresh Spanish food, give Trangallan (Islington) a try. They have a regularly updated takeaway menu that often includes delectable churros for dessert!
When choosing your holiday destination, being close to sea is often a key factor. Now although we aren’t able to get the fresh sea air here in London, we do have access to some delicious, fresh seafood. For example, the Michelin-starred Orasay (Notting Hill) has a daily changing menu of fresh fish including the likes of Cornish hake with shrimp butter, while Italian restaurant Bocca Di Lupo (Soho) are offering a range of produce to cook at home including fresh octopus for two.
Hopefully this will have inspired you to make the most of staying in London and eat like you’re on holiday this summer. If you’re looking for nightcap options to finish off a day of eating, do look out for our blog on how to drink like you’re on holiday, which is coming soon.
