Property of the Week #1

The Star & Garter House, TW10

Ever wondered what the perfect combination of luxury city living and stunning rural views looks like? Then look no further than this breath-taking two-bedroom apartment, located in the former Grade II listed Star & Garter building.

A rich history

Situated next to Richmond Park, the site started life as a small inn, built in 1738. Throughout its history the site has gone through several incarnations. In the early 19th century the inn was upgraded to an opulent hotel, housing notable guests such as Charles Dickens, Tennyson and King Louis Philippe. Indeed, Charles Dickens held a celebratory dinner at the Star & Garter Hotel to mark the publication of David Copperfield in 1851.

Devastation struck the hotel on 12th January 1870 when a great fire destroyed the old hotel building and took the life of the general manager, John Lever. New life was then given to the Star & Garter Hotel in 1874; the old fire-ruined buildings were cleared and new ones erected, designed by architect Charles J Phipps. The subsequent two decades saw many functions and charity dinners held at the hotel and the grand opulence of the venue continued. However, in 1909, following several changes in ownership, the building was left empty and abandoned.

1914 marked the outbreak of the First World War and this beautiful building was rented to the War Office as accommodation for troops being trained in Richmond Park. In 1915, the Auctioneers’ and Estate Agents’ Institute launched a public funds appeal to buy the hotel as a home for injured soldiers. Following success the site was donated to Queen Mary, Patron of the British Red Cross Society, and the first injured residents moved in during 1916.

Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that the building was too small and generally unsuitable suitable for its new role. Plans were developed to create a purpose-built home on the site. The original building was demolished in 1919 and reopened as the Star and Garter Home for Disabled Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen in 1924.

A new residence for the Royal Star & Garter Homes

The charity enjoyed over 90 years in this beautiful residence until the Royal Star & Garter Homes concluded the building was no longer appropriate for the nursing needs of its habitants in 2011. The residents were moved to a state-of-the-art care home in Surbiton where the charity continues its work.

Local development company, London Square, purchased the site and building in 2013 and redeveloped the stunning Grade II listed property into a range of two, three and four-bedroom apartments.

Two-bedroom apartment for sale in Star & Garter House

We’re delighted to be the agent of choice to market this stunning two-bedroom apartment in the Star & Garter House. Located on top of Richmond Hill, the property enjoys one of the most sought-after views in London.

As the only two-bedroom apartment available with views of the river, residents will benefit from top-class facilities akin to a five-star hotel, including a leisure suite with a pool, spa and treatment room, a cinema room, underground parking, a Harrod’s concierge, a town car service and access to the beautiful communal gardens.

The apartment itself comprises two double bedrooms boasting built-in storage, two bathrooms (one of which is an en suite), a large living area and a fully fitted kitchen with stone surfaces and Miele appliances. The high-quality bathrooms have been designed by Villeroy & Boch and the entire apartment benefits from underfloor heating and comfort cooling throughout.
