Press Release: Bayswater home of the father of Russian socialism comes onto the market
Tue 02 Aug 2011
His name may not trip off the tongue, but the London house where the reputed father of Russian socialism lived in exile has come onto the market with Marsh & Parsons for 995,000.
Alexander Herzen came to London after the death of his mother, wife and children in 1852 where he became acquainted with Karl Marx and was visited by the author Dostoyevsky who wrote Crime and Punishment. Here Herzen helped found the International Workingmens Association and is credited with creating the political climate in Russia which led to the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.The three bedroom apartment on the upper floor of this distinguished Bayswater house designed by architect George Wyatt bears a blue plaque to Herzen. It is estimated that the entire property was worth less than 3,000 nearly 160 years ago when Herzen lived there.*
The Herzen house comprises three bedrooms, two bathrooms and has a substantial reception room. Keith Gorny, Director of Marsh & Parsons, Notting Hill office, said: "You might think Alexander Herzen is a bit of a champagne socialist but I understand he had a father who left him large amounts of property which enabled him to buy this property.
The Bayswater area was not as fashionable then as it is now and this building has had so many famous guests that it must be regarded as having an important place in the history of Russian exiles."
