Press Release: Celeb Church Seeks Star Struck Tenant
Mon 28 Feb 2011
A renovated church used as a film location by the likes of Kate Winslet and Robert Downey Jnr, has come on to the rental market in the heart of Holland Park.
The 19th century property was a derelict church until converted in 1975. Despite modernisation and renovation, the property has retained an ecclesiastical feel, boasting a vaulted ceiling featuring the restored, ancient beams. In addition, the interior has been furnished with furniture from a mock-gothic church in Leeds.
To add to the historical appeal of the property, the converted church also features a long wooden dining table which was used by a group of literary luminaries including Samuel Beckett. There is a historic plaque set into the table revealing that it was also used by Harold Pinter, John Osborne and Penelope Gilliatt.
Over the years, the converted church has been used by the co-owner, Angela Conner, as a location for her sculpting studio, in which she has sculpted celebrities including playwrights Alan Bennett and Tom Stoppard, financier Lord Rothschild, Lord Sainsbury, soprano Dame Janet Baker and arts patron Dame Drue Heinz.
In addition, celebrities such as Kate Winslet and Robert Downey Jnr have both used the converted church as a location for filming. Minder filmed here at 1,000, a day which paid for one quarter of the agreed sale price!
However, when the owner, photographer John Bulmer, enquired about buying the church in Holland Park, he never envisaged that the purchase process would take nearly a decade. A complication arose, which involved a charity trust that owned the attached chapel independently to the Church of England, it took nine years between the exchange of contracts and the completion of the sale.
George and Dragon hall is being marketed by Marsh & Parsons at 1,750 per week.
