Tube genius had to catch the bus

Tue 29 Apr 2014

What would James Henry Greathead make of the Tube strikes? The civil engineer, who developed a technique for tunnelling through the clay under Londons streets, has been dubbed "the father of the Tube" and his statue stands near Bank station in the City, close to the Waterloo and City line which he helped to create.

Ironically, his former Barnes home, which has been honoured with an English Heritage blue plaque, has no underground station within walking distance.

Whoever buys the five-bedroom house, on the market with Marsh & Parsons at 4.2 million, may have to rely on the overground but at least Richmond Park and the boutiques of Barnes village are on the doorstep.
