HBF wants building commitment

The Home Builders Federation has urged all political parties to commit to policies that lead to a sustained housebuilding increase.

Stewart Baseley, executive chairman, said that while Help to Buy was finally starting to drive demand and significantly increase supply, the shortfall was huge. The trade body said Britain had a need for 1m more homes and called for 210,000 residential properties to be built each year. The comment came after the Office for National Statistics reported house prices across the country surged 6.9% in the year to January. The increase pushed up the average cost of a home in Britain to 254,000. Marsh and Parsons said prime London property continued to be a mecca for property investment.
