Press Release: Former artist's home on the market for 4 million
Tue 05 Mar 2013
Willoughby House, a spacious house built in 1840 overlooking Ravenscourt Park, was the studio for the noted British architect Ruskin Spear famous for his portraits of the great and the good of the day.
Spear, who died in 1990, would hardly recognize the house where he painted scenes of Hammersmith life and famous portraits of Laurence Olivier, Harold Wilson and Lord Grade. Owners Sarah and Robert Fairbairn have refurbished the former studio to make a luxurious and spacious six bedroomed home for them and their four children.Sarah, a former Evening Standard City journalist, and her husband Robert moved to New York and have decided to stay as their children aged from 19 to 13 are now in the American education system.
She said: We are ensconced in America where my husband works for an investment management company, so we have decided to sell our London home. I researched the life of Ruskin Spear and gather he used to paint characters from the pub opposite. A sweet old lady once called in and told me that all sorts of famous people like Dylan Thomas would come here. It is still a great party house!
The Fairbairns have now bought a town house in Gramercy Park, New York so are selling Willoughby House through Marsh & Parsons. The house has six bedrooms, five reception rooms and an impressive 80ft garden.
The property is being marketed by Marsh & Parsons for 4,000,000.
