Peter Rollings commenting in response to the latest Halifax house price index

Monday, 10 January 2011

Peter Rollings managing director of estate agent Marsh & Parsons, said:

"Halifax’s latest figures point towards another fall in house prices across the country last month. We are still seeing the impact of restricted lending to first-time buyers, which is holding back any recovery in the housing market.  But December was also an abnormal month.  The worst snowfall in a century reined in the number of buyers hitting the streets and viewing potential properties across many areas of the country.  This has accentuated the seasonal slowdown in the UK’s housing market. However, London’s market tells a very different story. Despite the snowfall, buyer demand for prime property in London remained strong compared with November and a slight decline in the number of properties available supported property prices in the centre of the capital. With more properties for sale beginning to come onto the market, and demand set to remain strong from both international and UK investors – who are not affected by the ongoing mortgage famine, we anticipate central London’s market to perform even more robustly in the coming months."
