Peter Rollings commenting on the Halifax house price figures
Wednesday, 08 September 2010
"The growth in house prices slowed last month as the traditional summer lull in buyer demand materialised. But, the good news for the housing market is that, despite the significant increase in the supply of homes for sale this year, house prices have remained steady. Nationally, many buyers are still adversely affected by the short supply of mortgage funding, but those who are able to access finance are benefiting hugely from sustained low interest rates and this is boosting demand. Undoubtedly, the issue of mortgage lending needs urgent addressing, but there is a scant evidence of a 'double-dip' in prices on the horizon. This is certainly the case in the London market, where demand continues to be strong and there is now adequate supply to meet this."
