Peter Rolling commenting following this morning’s mortgage approval figures from the BBA
Tuesday, 23 February 2010
"Mortgage approvals fell harder than expected in January. With much of the UK snowed in, the number of property viewings plummeted in many parts of the country, which severely impacted activity levels. But in London it was a very different story. Demand from buyers was particularly strong early in the New Year and - in spite of the bad weather - diaries for viewings were unusually busy. In many cases, those with ‘snow days’ or working from home made the most of the opportunity to go house-hunting locally.
"Nationally, seasonal factors – and the end of the stamp duty holiday - have taken their toll on the property market in the early stages of 2010. What is encouraging is that the health of the London market continues to improve with plentiful keen buyers and increasing numbers of sellers and our expectation is that this will be the driving force behind recovery in the wider property market."
